“Great to see the partnership between University Sailing and RPAYC developing, and I hope this fleet event becomes an important annual event in university sailor and RPAYC calendars”.    Jill Connell – Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club Director
Yesterday saw the conclusion of the 2013 Australian Universities Yacht Racing Championships. Very close racing and fluky conditions kept the team's racing hard over the two-day regatta.

James Burman was dominant yesterday with top fleet results from the 5 races. He started consistently and maintained leads where others couldn't. While he kept in close contact with Milly Bennett and her team from Sydney University, they were unable to come back from first day losses. Milly Bennett finished the regatta with a close lead over James to become this year's champion. Milly and her crew sailed well all regatta and their experience in the force 24's and onPittwater paid off in undesirable and shifty wind.

A special mention goes to the UNSW team, who despite sailing with a green crew, sailed to a convincing third place in the last race against world-class sailors, an impressive achievement that should not be overlooked.

The regatta was a great success with all the teams thoroughly enjoying the experience. We wish Milly success in France and hope she can pull off similar results against the world's best at the 2013 Student Yachting World Cup.

We'd also like to thank Harken for sponsoring the event, they supplied generous prizes that were greatly appreciated by the podium teams. A special thank you to the Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club and all their race officials, volunteers and staff for helping organise this regatta.

While the competition this year was awesome, the regatta next year is shaping up to be a bigger and better competition with many other teams now showing interest. University Racing Sydney thanks all the teams and race management and is looking forward to delivering many more successful regattas for university students in the future. Stay tuned for the 2014 University Yacht Racing National championships.

Three universities had a fighting chance to win the title, but Jaidan Steven’s team from University Of Sydney did enough to maintain his overnight lead and win the championship.

James Burman from Macquarie University made the Sydney University team fight hard till the very end. The race area was tricky as wind conditions were light and shifty. All teams kept everyone on the edge of their seats, as racing was extremely close. The race committee did a fantastic job to complete seven races.

University Of Sydney was awarded the prestigious Australian University Sailing Association rolling trophy for the year 2013. The new national champions were also awarded selection to represent Australia at the 2013 Student Yachting World Cup in Pronic, France to be held later in October this year.
